Roberto Di Matteo and Steve Clarke may be set to team up at Aston Villa
Di Matteo spent just under a season in charge at Schalke
Roberto Di Matteo will be named the new manager of Aston Villa on Friday, according to Sky sources.
And Di Matteo is set to be assisted by Steve Clarke, a former team mate at Chelsea during their playing days.

Former Chelsea manager Di Matteo has been top of Villa's shortlist since new owner Dr Tony Jiantong Xia acquired the club last month.
The 46-year-old Italian boss memorably guided Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2012 and is seen by Dr Xia as the man to guide Villa back to the Premier League, following their disastrous 2015-16 campaign.
Pete Colley of Sky Sports reported on Thursday afternoon: "There are reports out there saying that Roberto Di Matteo has been appointed. I can tell you that he has not signed his contract.
"They are still in negotiations, he and Aston Villa, and also there are talks over bringing Steve Clarke in as Roberto Di Matteo's assistant.
"It is my understanding this will all be resolved overnight and it will be announced tomorrow."

Since leaving Chelsea in 2012, Di Matteo has mostly been out of management, with the exception of a fairly short stint at German side Schalke which ended in May 2015.
He has never managed alongside Clarke, although the duo have both spent time at Chelsea and West Brom, who Di Matteo steered to promotion from the Championship back in 2010.
Clarke was sacked by Reading last year

Clarke, who has previously worked as an assistant at Newcastle, Chelsea, West Ham and Liverpool, subsequently led West Brom to their highest Premier League finish (eighth) in 2013.

He has been out of work since he was sacked by Championship side Reading in December last year.

Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid (AET, 5-3 pens): Ronaldo settles dramatic shoot-ou

Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid (AET, 5-3 pens): Ronaldo settles dramatic shoot-ou
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the all important spot-kick after Juanfran crucially missed as Zinedine Zidane's charges claimed their 11th European Cup at the San Siro on Saturday
Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final for the second time in three years as they won a dramatic penalty shoot-out in Milan.
After 120 minutes of action ended in a 1-1 draw, Atletico's Juanfran was the unfortunate man to miss, allowing Cristiano Ronaldo to slot home the decisive spot-kick as Real won 5-3 on penalties.
Real were much the better team in the first half and took the lead through Sergio Ramos, who got a faint touch on Gareth Bale's header from close range to haunt Atletico again after his vital goal in his side's 2014 victory.
Atleti came out fighting after the break, but Antoine Griezmann crashed a penalty against the crossbar as they looked set to fall to another painful defeat against their city rivals in club football's biggest fixture.
But substitute Yannick Carrasco's strike from inside the six-yard box with 11 minutes remaining sent the game to extra-time, where neither side found a winner to prevent spot-kicks.
But Atletico hearts were broken again as Ronaldo punished Juanfran’s crucial miss in the penalty shoot-out, with the Portuguese’s topless celebration and tears from the Colchoneros fans bringing back memories from their defeat in Lisbon.
Real's victory means they are now 11-time European champions with Zinedine Zidane becoming the seventh man to win the tournament as both player and coach after only five months at the helm.

Atletico, meanwhile, suffered their third heartbreaking defeat in a European Cup final, with Diego Simeone missing out on the opportunity to win every major honour available since taking charge of the club.
Real came close to taking an early lead when Bale fired in a free-kick that was turned towards goal by Karim Benzema a few yards out, but Jan Oblak made a crucial save with his legs.
The breakthrough did arrive in the 15th minute, though, with Toni Kroos' free-kick flicked on by Bale before Ramos prodded his effort under Oblak from close range.
Despite Ramos appearing to have strayed narrowly offside, the goal stood to make him the first defender to score in two Champions League finals.
At the other end, Griezmann shot straight at Keylor Navas twice before sending another effort narrowly wide as he attempted to lift Atletico from what was a flat first-half performance.

Simeone made a half-time change with Carrasco replacing Augusto Fernandez and Atletico were awarded a penalty within a minute of the restart when Griezmann fed Fernando Torres in the area and the striker drew a foul from Pepe.
But Griezmann could only cannon his spot-kick against the crossbar as Real survived.
A tearful Dani Carvajal had to be withdrawn through injury for Zidane's men, who continued to come under pressure with Stefan Savic somehow missing the target from six yards after Diego Godin and Griezmann had kept a corner alive.
But for all of Atletico's improvement, they were not testing Navas and Real should have made sure of victory when Benzema was thwarted by Oblak after Luka Modric had impressively sent him through on goal.
They came even closer when the otherwise quiet Ronaldo was denied by Oblak twice in quick succession, with Bale's attempt from the rebound cleared off the line by Savic.

And that missed opportunity proved costly as Atletico went up the other end and equalised, with Juanfran's brilliant volleyed cross after Gabi's chipped pass emphatically converted byCarrasco.
Ramos' cynical challenge on Carrasco thwarted a stoppage-time Atletico breakaway to send the match to extra-time, where Ronaldo completely misjudged a headed chance having been found by substitute Isco in the best opening.
The first seven penalties - including Griezmann's effort - were all scored, until Juanfran hit the foot of the post, allowing Ronaldo to seal European glory.

Tim Stevenson: lots to take in, what do we make of European markets

Tim Stevenson: lots to take in, what do we make of European markets
r6p4eig3
In celebration of the birthday of author and poet Edward Lear, Thursday was declared National Limerick Day.
Former Bank of England monetary policy committee member Andrew Sentance took this to heart and decided the form of rhyming couplet was the best way to communicate his views on current monetary policy. This is his effort:
There was an economist called Andrew Sentance,
Who believed he was talking good sense
“These low rates are bad
And they’re driving me mad
So it’s high time to end all this nonsense”
The current members of the committee appear to share neither their erstwhile colleague’s taste for poetry, nor his opinion on the level of interest rates. Instead, Bank Governor Mark Carney and his cohort of rate setters left borrowing costs on hold for the 86th consecutive month.
Within the accompanying quarterly Inflation Report Mr Carney also revealed a cut in growth forecasts for the next three years, while highlighting the potential costs should the UK vote to leave the European Union (EU).
Stock Tickers
In the words of Aberdeen Asset Management Chief Economist Lucy O’Carroll, “The Bank has left us in no doubt that they think economic life would probably be more uncertain and difficult if we leave the EU. No one should be under any illusion that the Bank thinks that this is the biggest risk to the outlook for the UK economy at the moment.
“The most interesting thing about today is that Mr Carney was very opaque about what the referendum could mean for interest rates. We are no clearer about whether Brexit could mean a cut, rise or nothing at all for interest rates. But he did make clear that there’s only so much that the Bank can do to offset the effects of the referendum.”

In a hole

In a pattern of trading that has become all too familiar, the FTSE 100 index oscillated in line with global commodities markets. At the start of the week, mining stocks plunged following a fresh fall in iron ore prices, which soon spread to other metals markets. Shares in index heavyweights Glencore, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto all sunk.
The FT’s reporting of the story generated what must be the headline of the week.
Metal price weakness was counterbalanced to some extent by strength in the oil price after a report showed a surprise fall in US weekly crude oil inventories. The US Energy Information Administration said crude-oil stockpiles fell 3.4 million barrels in the week to 6 May. The report helped to ease concerns about the glut in oil supplies, which has pushed prices lower over the last year and a half.
By the end of the week, the negative factors had outweighed the positives and the FTSE 100 was down by 0.35% as at the close on Thursday, slipping perilously close to the psychologically significant 6,000 mark.

Falling down

In company news, shares in house builders crumbled on Tuesday after data showed UK residential property prices fell 0.8% in April compared to the previous month. The decline follows the introduction of extra stamp duty for second home owners and buy-to-let investors.
Shares in travel and airline companies soared after EasyJet received an upgrade to profits forecasts and travel company TUI rallied following a set of robust results.
Meanwhile, investors gorged themselves on Greggs shares after the company reported an unexpected rise in sales during the first quarter of 2016.

And finally…

Bankers have come in for a lot of criticism in recent years. Avarice, short-termism and greed are all traits with which the industry have arguably become tainted. But given the long hours clocked up by many bankers, indolence isn’t typically among the accusations levelled at high-flying financiers.
However, a recent report claims that the financial sector contains some of the biggest time wasters and layabouts in the country. The study by the University of Cambridge and insurer Vitality Health revealed that bankers are less likely to call in sick than workers in other sectors, but they apparently waste an average of 25 working days a year “browsing the internet, daydreaming, staring out of the window and not concentrating properly”.
Perhaps surprisingly, given the abundance of distractions, such as ping pong tables and oversized bean bags in the ‘breakout areas’ of technology sector companies, this sector contains the most productive workers. They apparently waste a mere 19 days a year.
Now, time to open that spreadsheet back up in case your boss is looking over your shoulder.
