Dinosaurs are a diverse group of animals of the clade Dinosauria. They first appeared during the Triassic period, 231.4 million years ago, and were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates for 135 million years, from the start of the Jurassic (about 200 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous (66 million years ago),[1] when the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event led to theextinction of most dinosaur groups at the end of the Mesozoic Era.
Until the late 20th century, all groups of dinosaurs were believed to be extinct; however, the fossil record indicates that birds are the modern descendants of feathered dinosaurs, having evolved from theropod ancestors during the Jurassic Period,[2] and are now termed "avian dinosaurs". As such, birds were the only dinosaur lineage to survive the mass extinction event.[3] Throughout the remainder of this article, the term "dinosaur" is sometimes used generically to refer to both the avian and non-avian dinosaurs combined, while at other times it is used to refer to the non-avian dinosaurs specifically, and the avian dinosaurs are sometimes simply referred to as "birds". This article deals primarily with the extinct non-avian dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs are a varied group of animals from taxonomicmorphological and ecological standpoints. Birds, at over 10000 living species,[4] are the most diverse group of vertebrates besides perciform fish.[5] Using fossil evidence, paleontologists have identified over 500 distinct genera[6] and more than 1000 different species of non-avian dinosaurs.[7]
Dinosaurs are represented on every continent by both extant species and fossil remains.[8] Some are herbivorous, others carnivorous. While dinosaurs were ancestrally bipedal, many extinct groups included quadrupedal species, and some were able to shift between these stances. Elaborate display structures such as horns or crests are common to all dinosaur groups, and some extinct groups developed skeletal modifications such as bony armor and spines. Evidence suggests that egg laying and nest building are additional traits shared by all dinosaurs.
While the modern-day surviving lineage of dinosaurs (birds) are generally small due to the constraints of flight, many prehistoric dinosaurs were large-bodied—the largest sauropod dinosaurs are estimated to have reached lengths of 39.7 meters (130 feet)[9]and heights of 18 meters (59 feet)[10][11] and were the largest land animals of all time. Still, the idea that non-avian dinosaurs were uniformly gigantic is a misconception based in part on preservation bias, as large, sturdy bones are more likely to last until they are fossilized. Many dinosaurs were quite small: Xixianykus, for example, was only about 50 cm (20 in) long.
Although the word dinosaur literally means "terrible lizard", the name is somewhat an etymological misnomer and misleading, being that even though dinosaurs represent a separate group of reptiles, they are not lizards, nor are they descended from the lizard group of reptiles. Instead, dinosaurs, like many extinct forms of reptile sub-groups, did not exhibit characteristics which were traditionally regarded as reptilian, such as a sprawling limb posture or ectothermy (colloquially referred to as "cold-bloodedness"). Additionally, many other prehistoric animals, including mosasaursichthyosaurspterosaursplesiosaurs, andDimetrodon, while often popularly conceived of as dinosaurs, are not taxonomically classified as dinosaurs.
Through the first half of the 20th century, before birds were recognized to be dinosaurs, most of the scientific community believed dinosaurs to have been sluggish and cold-blooded. Most research conducted since the 1970s, however, has indicated that all dinosaurs were active animals with elevated metabolisms and numerous adaptations for social interaction.
Since the first dinosaur fossils were recognized in the early 19th century, mounted fossil dinosaur skeletons have been major attractions at museums around the world, and dinosaurs have become an enduring part of world culture. The large sizes of some dinosaur groups, as well as their seemingly monstrous and fantastic nature, have ensured dinosaurs' regular appearance in best-selling books and films, such as Jurassic Park. Persistent public enthusiasm for the animals has resulted in significant funding for dinosaur science, and new discoveries are regularly covered by the media.

Marcus Rashford has agreed a new long-term contract with Manchester United that will see his weekly wage rocket to at least £20,000-a-week. According to The Telegraph, the deal will be at least four years long and will include a number of performance-related bonuses that could see the 18-year-old earn significantly more than his basic salary. Rashford's old contract saw him earn a reported £500-a-week and had just 12 months to run on it. But, of course, he has since become a household name, scoring his first senior international goal for England against Australia on Friday night. SIGN UP NOW Want to become a GMS writer? Special One-Two: Mourinho should hire Gary Neville, says Stan
Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t make too many mistakes in his 27-year reign at Manchester United .
But the one clanger he did drop towards the end was a big one that Jose Mourinho , Ed Woodward and the United board must be certain not to repeat, writes Stan Collymore in the Sunday People .
Fergie had the chance to bring the Class of 92 on to his coaching staff two or three years before his departure.
He could have educated them, groomed them, let them take the odd League Cup or FA Cup game and fully opened up his management mine so he could say, ‘There you go, these people are now ready to run this club’, when it was time for him to leave.
Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt would all have had five or so years’ experience by now and United would have stayed true to their core values and principles of loyalty and promoting from within.
Action Images via ReutersSir Alex Ferguson in the stands before the match
Exit plan: Ferguson missed an opportunity to educate the Class of 92
But Fergie was all about Fergie, and so selfish and paranoid about not wanting to be anything other than top dog that he failed to prepare the club for his exit as he should have.
That led to the appointment of David Moyes and subsequently Louis van Gaal, and United have stuttered and stumbled ever since.
Mourinho’s arrival on a three-year deal means they now have the right man at the right time.

Corporate Earnings and Capital Flows are the Focus for the Weeks Ahead

Corporate Earnings and Capital Flows are the Focus for the Weeks Ahead
dollar-726884_960_720
Although markets seemed to really quieten down ahead of the long Easter weekend, there was still enough happening and enough on the near horizon to keep us on our toes. Rather than dive into a long essay like we did last week, we will just have a look at a couple of things that have caught our eye.
First, the third revision to fourth quarter US GDP was released on Friday, and with that came the calculation of corporate profits, as measured on a national accounts basis. As expected, corporate profits on this measure were horrible, falling more than 11% year on year. We have said many times that declining corporate profits leads the US into recession as shown in chart 1 below. The only major false signal in the last 45 years was in 1986, which interestingly was the last time that the oil price collapsed at a time when US oil production was close to current levels.
Chart 1 – US Corporate profits (year on year % change) and Real GDP

Companies’ own pro forma results are expected to decline by about 9%, year on year, in the first quarter of 2016 so we will just have to wait and see whether the corporate sector finally starts dragging the economy into recession or whether the consumer (who is still keeping the US economic engine sputtering along) will be strong enough to keep the US just above stall speed. The start of the US quarterly results season is only a couple of weeks away, and it feels like it could be a very important quarter for US companies, particularly the message they give to investors about the outlook for the year ahead.
Second, we came across an analysis from Horseman Capital linking the performance of the Japanese equity market to the US. The thought process is that the US has run a persistent current account deficit in recent decades, and this needs to be funded by someone else’s capital. The world’s biggest saver continues to be Japan who has been funding the US for years. Of course, all current account deficits will be funded, but at what price? In the words of Horseman Capital, “My view is that the Japanese are the world’s biggest net savers and investors, and it is the movement of Japanese investments that cause the biggest moves in currencies and equities.”
The point of the notes is to illustrate that the Japanese equity market has peaked 3 to 6 months ahead of the S&P 500 at the last two peaks in 2000 and 2007, as can be seen in chart 2 below.
Chart 2 – The US and Japanese equity markets
RMG2

The chart also shows that the Japanese equity market peaked last summer. So far, this looks to be coincident with the peak in the US although clearly Japan has underperformed in recent months, perhaps leading the way as in 2000 and 2007.
This begs questions over capital flows in general, and the increasingly disappointing performance of Japanese equities despite massive QE from the Bank of Japan (same for European equities after a year of QE from the ECB). To keep this note short this week, we won’t delve into this any further; simply leaving this out there as an interesting thought. We would point out that we have looked at global liquidity in recent weeks and in particular the change in global FX reserves and how they rise and fall with asset prices. Needless to say, when global FX reserves are falling, and domestic asset prices of the world’s largest savers (Japan and Germany) are falling, then perhaps it’s only a matter of time before even the mighty US equity market stumbles. (FX is the focus of the RMG FX Strategy – our recently launched UCITS compliant fund – see HERE for details).
For many months now, we have been trying to articulate how we feel that equity markets, the US in particular, are overvalued. With corporate earnings now declining, economic growth stalling, central bank credibility falling and global liquidity tightening, we find it very difficult to be bullish and all too easy to be bearish. Add in geopolitical concerns and structural headwinds like demographics (Japan and Europe in particular), poor productivity and high and rising inequality and our bearishness only increases.

This bendable smartphone comes with a catch
It is possible to introduce a lot of complexity into the selection of investments. Is it better to invest in large or small companies, for example? Or with this fund manager or that fund manager? Should an investor be looking at just the UK, or globally? However, for many novice investors, these decisions can seem baffling. We believe that it is possible to achieve good returns while keeping it simple.
The stock market can seem daunting to a new investor who is making their first tentative move away from a cash savings account. Some market participants make a virtue of jargon and obfuscation. In reality, novice investors can get many of the benefits of investment just by holding a diversified investment in the stock market, rather than making more complex decisions.
Investing in the stock markets has historically proved to be a good way to grow wealth over the long term. The definitive study on this is the Barclays Equity Gilt Study. It shows that over 50 years, equities have produced annualised real returns (after taking inflation into consideration) of 5.5 per cent a year. In contrast, UK government bonds (gilts) have delivered 2.5 per cent. Over 20 years, the respective figures are 4.1 per cent and 3.5 per cent. (https://wealth.barclays.com/en_gb/smartinvestor/better-investor/investing-lessons-from-114-years-of-data.html).
Investing in the stock market has also often provided better protection against inflation. It is easy to forget the corrosive effects of inflation in an environment where growth in consumer prices is near zero but over the long term, it has exerted a powerful drag on people’s savings. An investor would have needed a £10,000 investment made in 2000 to grow to £15,500 today to have the same purchasing power. (http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-1633409/Historic-inflation-calculator-value-money-changed-1900.html). All it would take is some recovery in the oil price for inflation to start exerting pressure again.
In the current environment, stock market investment also produces an attractive income relative to other asset classes. The FTSE All Share currently has a dividend yield of 3.39%. This compares to just 1.88% for the 10-year gilt.
Dividends are an important source of returns from the stock market. Since 1990, those who have reinvested their dividends, would have seen their investment increase 8-fold (http://markets.ft.com/research/Markets/Tearsheets/Summary?s=FTAL:FSI), as opposed to around 3-fold for those who didn’t. Income is an often-neglected part of an investor’s overall return.
These advantages are available simply from having been invested in the market. Certainly, it may have been possible to make higher returns by investing in, say, smaller companies, or the right emerging market, but this is often difficult to predict and investors can achieve a lot of the good aspects of stock market investment without introducing that level of nuance.
However, that stock market investment needs to be diversified. This helps ensure that investors are not too exposed to individual companies. Investors also need to ensure that costs do not exert too much of a drag on their investment returns and that they are receiving the income as well as the capital growth from their investment. .
In this, we would make a case for a passive investment in the FTSE All Share. The index is naturally diversified: There are 646 companies represented in the index, diversified across 10 major sectors – oil & gas, basic materials, industrials, consumer goods, healthcare, consumer services, telecommunications, utilities, financials and technology. The largest sector – financials – makes up 26%.
The FTSE All Share is weighted by company size and therefore provides access to the UK’s largest companies, including HSBC, Royal Dutch Shell, British American Tobacco, GlaxoSmithKline and Vodafone. Many of these companies are large, global businesses and therefore an investor will also have some exposure to the fortunes of the global economy. However, a weighting in smaller and medium-sized companies also ensures that investors are not only exposed to the largest companies.
Taking stock market exposure via a FTSE All Share tracker also scores on transparency. An investor can see exactly how the index is comprised and the type of companies to which they will be exposed. There is no risk of a sudden lurch towards one sector or another. The index performance is widely available on financial websites and an investor will know that if the market rises, their investment will rise as well. This may be more reassuring to a novice investor than seeing the market rise and then having to wonder why their investment has fallen (or vice versa, of course).
Equally, using a tracker fund tends to be cheaper than using an active fund and, as mentioned above, the FTSE All Share also has a relatively high dividend yield.
There are a number of other ways investors can keep it simple. Perhaps most important is to harness the power of compounding, which is an effective means to increase returns over time. In this, it is important to stay invested: Investors who trade in and out of the market will often find their return is not as high as those investors who simply leave their investment alone. In the short-term markets are unpredictable and, in practice, investors tend to be poor at timing.
Stock market investment may seem complex to the novice investor, but there are real advantages to keeping it simple. The Aberdeen UK Tracker fund is a low cost investment trust, designed to track the income and capital return of the FTSE All Share index. We believe it is a straightforward means to achieve diversified exposure to the UK market, allowing investors to lock in many of the advantages of stock market investment without the need for complex decision-making.

The value of investments and the income from them can fall and investors may get back less than the amount invested. Please remember that past performance is not a guide to future results.
